If your first view of St Ives comes from the train, Porthminster Beach may be one of the first places that makes you reach for your camera. The broad sweep of pale sand and blue-green water sits just below the railway line and a short walk from the centre.
A more sheltered beach
Porthminster generally feels more sheltered than Atlantic-facing Porthmeor. On a calm summer day, the water and sand can look surprisingly tropical, although this is still Cornwall and the weather can change quickly.
Families often appreciate the beach because of its location and relatively easy access.
Perfect when arriving by train
One of Porthminster’s biggest advantages is convenience. St Ives railway station is nearby, making it possible to step off the train and be beside the sea within minutes.
If you are visiting St Ives for the day, this makes the beach an easy first or final stop.
Walk into town
From Porthminster you can follow the waterfront towards the harbour and central St Ives. It is a much better introduction to town than immediately heading for busy streets.
Do less
My advice for Porthminster is not to turn it into an attraction that needs a schedule. Bring something to read, swim when conditions are suitable, have lunch nearby and enjoy the view.
Check local safety information before entering the water and remember that facilities and services can vary by season.
St Ives has several beaches worth exploring, but Porthminster is particularly good for visitors who want beautiful scenery without having to travel away from town. It is seaside Cornwall at its easiest.
