St Ives may be small, but it is surprisingly easy to fill several days here. Beaches, galleries, coastal walks and the harbour are all close together, which means you can do plenty without spending much of your holiday travelling.
Visit Tate St Ives
Overlooking Porthmeor Beach, Tate St Ives is the town’s best-known cultural attraction. Its exhibitions explore modern and contemporary art, with a strong connection to the artists who made St Ives internationally famous.
Nearby, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden is another essential stop if you are interested in the town’s artistic history.
Choose a beach
Porthmeor is popular with surfers and sits dramatically below Tate St Ives. Porthminster is a beautiful sandy beach close to the railway station, while smaller beaches around the town offer their own atmosphere.
On a sunny day, do not overcomplicate things. A few hours on the sand may be the best activity available.
Walk around the harbour
The harbour is the natural centre of St Ives. Come early in the morning if you want to see it at its quietest, then return later when cafés, pubs and restaurants are busy.
Follow the coast
The South West Coast Path runs through the area and gives walkers access to some superb coastal scenery. You do not need to attempt a huge hike; choose a manageable section and allow plenty of time for stops.
Leave space in your schedule
My advice is not to book every hour. St Ives works best when you have time to wander into a small gallery, stop for a Cornish pasty or change your plans because the weather suddenly turns perfect for the beach.
