Choosing where to stay in St Ives is less about finding the “best” hotel and more about deciding what kind of holiday you want. A room near the harbour gives you atmosphere and convenience, while accommodation farther out can offer more space and a quieter evening.
Stay near the harbour
If this is your first visit and you are travelling without a car, central St Ives is hard to beat. You can walk to restaurants, galleries and several beaches, and you will be able to enjoy the harbour before and after the busiest part of the day.
The trade-off is obvious: central locations can be busy, especially during summer and school holidays.
Near Porthmeor Beach
For surfers and beach lovers, staying around Porthmeor puts the Atlantic almost outside your door. Tate St Ives is nearby and the town centre remains within easy walking distance.
Porthminster and the station
The area around Porthminster Beach can be particularly convenient for visitors arriving by train. You get a beautiful beach and relatively easy access to the centre without needing to drive into the narrow streets.
Look beyond the centre
Guesthouses, holiday cottages and other accommodation outside the busiest streets can provide better value or more space. Just check the walking distance carefully: Cornwall has hills, and a short distance on a map can feel longer on the way back.
Book early for summer
St Ives is extremely popular during peak periods. If you have fixed summer dates, I would not leave accommodation until the last minute.
Personally, I would choose location over luxury here. Being able to walk to the beach in the morning and back from dinner in the evening adds a lot to a St Ives stay.
