Carbis Bay sits just outside St Ives and is close enough to feel like part of the same trip while offering a noticeably quieter atmosphere. Its sheltered sandy beach is the main attraction, backed by green slopes and views across St Ives Bay.
A sheltered Cornish beach
The beach is generally more protected than the open Atlantic coast around Porthmeor. On a calm sunny day, the clear water and pale sand can look almost subtropical.

Take the train
One of the nicest ways to reach Carbis Bay is by rail. The branch line between St Erth and St Ives follows the coast and Carbis Bay has its own station.
The journey is short, but the views make it feel like an attraction in itself.
Walk between Carbis Bay and St Ives
If you would rather use your feet, the coastal route between Carbis Bay and St Ives makes a lovely outing. Expect slopes and uneven sections, and wear shoes that are more suitable than beach flip-flops.
You can walk one way and use the train for the other, depending on current services.
Stay or visit?
Carbis Bay also works as a base for a St Ives holiday. Visitors who prefer quieter evenings may enjoy staying here and travelling into St Ives when they want restaurants, galleries and busier streets.
For a simple day out, I would arrive in the morning, spend time on the beach and walk or take the train into St Ives later.
It is close enough to be convenient but different enough to deserve its own place on your Cornwall itinerary.
