South West Coast Path from St Ives – Walking the Cornish Coast

The South West Coast Path is one of the best reasons to pack proper walking shoes for St Ives. You do not need to tackle hundreds of miles; even a few hours on the trail can take you from busy streets to wild Atlantic scenery.

Choose your direction

The coast path continues in both directions from St Ives. Routes vary considerably in length and difficulty, with steep climbs and uneven ground in places.

Before setting off, choose a walk that suits your fitness, available daylight and the weather rather than simply picking the most impressive distance.

Walk west for wilder scenery

Heading along the coast beyond Porthmeor takes you towards increasingly rugged landscapes. The views can be spectacular, but exposed sections deserve respect in poor weather.

Use public transport

One-way walks can be a great option if local bus or train connections allow you to return without retracing every step. Always check current services before relying on them.

Prepare for Cornish weather

Sunshine can turn into wind, rain or mist surprisingly quickly. Carry water, wear suitable footwear and bring an extra layer even when the morning looks promising.

Stay back from cliff edges and keep dogs under appropriate control, particularly around livestock and wildlife.

Do not rush

My favourite kind of coastal walk includes unnecessary stops. Sit on a rock, watch the sea, take photographs and have something to eat.

The point is not to complete the route as quickly as possible.

St Ives is beautiful from inside the town, but the coast path gives you the wider perspective. After walking for an hour or two, looking back towards the town makes its location on the Cornish coast even more impressive.
